As part of a project to make walking sticks for themselves and members of the local community, Batley Men’s Shed approached Kirklees Council’s Parks Department Volunteer Coordinator Patrick Crowley to see if they could cut some stakes which they could dry out to making walking sticks.
Patrick was already working with the Friends of Batley Station who needed some help in cutting back young ash trees which were growing up around the station.
Under the direction of Patrick members of Batley Men’s Shed gathered at the station and soon got to work with bow saws and loppers cutting back the ash trees. Very quickly they had cut a good supply of stakes and at the same time had helped to look after their local environment. It was a true win win and given the thumbs up.
